Spotlight Interview: Angela Tierney, Mill Gate shopping Centre, Bury

As part of our All Together Bury series, we’re celebrating the places that sit at the heart of everyday life in the town. This time, we caught up with Angela Tierney, Centre Manager at Mill Gate Shopping Centre, Bury’s long-standing community shopping centre in the town centre.

Since opening in 1992, The Mill Gate has played a key role in shaping the look, feel and culture of Bury town centre.

Q: For anyone new to the Mill Gate, how would you describe what you offer?
Angela:
“We’re a community shopping centre with a fantastic mix of independent retailers, well-known high street brands and value stores. There’s something here for everyone, and we’re proud to be a space that people of all ages can enjoy.”

Q: The Mill Gate Shopping Centre has been part of Bury for over 30 years. Why is it so special to the town?
Angela:
“Mill Gate sits at the historic retail heart of Bury. It’s never just been about shopping – it’s a place where people meet, connect and spend time together.”

“Over the years, the centre has evolved to support independent traders alongside value-driven retailers, which gives it real character and a strong community feel.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about being part of Bury’s business community?
Angela:
“There’s a real passion for Bury and its people. Businesses work together to make the town a better place, and there’s a strong sense of pride in what we offer. We know Bury has something special, and that shared belief makes a huge difference.”

Q: This campaign is called ‘All Together Bury’. What does that mean for The Mill Gate?
Angela:
“Being a community-based shopping centre, collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We work with a wide range of charities and organisations, offering space for exhibitions and supporting fundraising initiatives.”

“Last year alone, we helped raise over £57,000 for local causes including Bury Hospice, the Blind Society, the British Legion and the Veterans Art Collective.”

“We’re also proud sponsors of the Bury FC Under-11s Juniors, supporting the revival of our local football club and investing in the town’s future.”

Q: And finally — your Bury favourites…
Favourite spots: “Number Ten for breakfast, Barista or Bap for lunch, and Mr Simms for a sweet treat.”
Hidden gems:Bury Art Gallery or The Met — especially for a tribute band night.”
Go-to order: “A hot chocolate from The Coffee House.”

Q: What’s next for The Mill Gate?
Angela:
“As part of the wider Bury Town Centre Masterplan, Mill Gate is planned for redevelopment. In the future, the centre will become a mixed-use space, bringing together housing, workspace, retail and community uses.”

“It’s an exciting next chapter – one that will continue to support the town, its businesses and the people who call Bury home.”
