Spotlight On: The Rock Shopping Centre – 15 Years of Pulling Power for Bury

A closer look at The Rock
A regional magnet.
Opened on 16 July 2010, The Rock delivers c. 600,000 sq ft of retail-and-leisure space and now hosts 60-plus brands within an 18-minute drive-time catchment that takes in Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham and Burnley.
Footfall that changed the game.
The scheme drew 2 million visits in its first ten weeks, smashed its year-one target by clocking 10 million shoppers, and therefore lifted footfall at nearby Bury Market by 10–15 per cent.
Where does it rank?
Research for Bury Council and the Javelin Group (2013) placed Bury’s town-centre offer third in Greater Manchester, behind Manchester city centre (including the Arndale) and the Trafford Centre. Significantly, Manchester Arndale welcomed 46 million visitors in 2023, while the Trafford Centre averages approximately 30 million a year.
Economic impact.
Within 12 months The Rock was 89 % let, supporting hundreds of jobs and helping Bury leap 77 places to break into the UK’s top-100 retail destinations.
Celebrating 15 years. The centre has kicked off a summer of activity with:
- a giant “15” photo-prop and a £1,500 shopping-spree prize draw (#15YearsOfTheRock);
- launch-day butterfly stilt-walkers and roaming dragons;

- A mix of businesses: rapid re-letting and new brand arrivals keep the offer fresh.
- It’s an events engine: regular experiential programming (fashion showcases, free mazes, community concerts) turns day-trip shoppers into repeat visitors.
