This September, step into the stories that make Bury unique. Heritage Open Days is your chance to peek behind closed doors, wander hidden corners, and celebrate the history and culture that shape our town—all completely free.

This year’s theme, “Routes – Networks – Connections: How We’ve Built the World Around Us,” is all about how buildings, streets and landmarks link us together. From ancient churches to bustling railways, every doorway and pathway tells a tale of the people who built—and still build—our community.

Event Highlights

• The Met Celebrates 50 Years –12 – 13 September
  Live gigs, a quiz, heritage tours, new artwork and more at The Met. Details and booking at themet.org.uk.

• Bury Archives – Throughout Heritage Open Days
  Browse centuries of documents, maps and photos inside Bury Art Museum, Moss Street. No booking required.

• War Memorials Guided Walk at The Fusilier Museum – 19 September, 11 am
  Discover the stories behind Bury Town Centre’s war memorials on this free guided walk.

• East Lancashire Railway Behind-the-Scenes – 17–18 September
  Free access to Bury Transport Museum, a platform tour, and a rare look inside the Castle Croft Engine Shed where heritage locomotives are stored and maintained—plus a complimentary ticket to Bury Transport Museum. Booking essential via East Lancashire Railway.

• Bury Parish Church – Throughout Heritage Open Days
  Explore over 1,000 years of worship and history at St Mary the Virgin, The Rock, BL9 0AH. Open during church hours. No booking required.
• Bury Castle Talk – 13 September, 2 pm
  Free talk at Bury Art Museum, Moss Street, BL9 0DR. Discover the dramatic story of medieval Bury Castle—plotting, rebellion and all. No booking required.

• The Pattern of Streets – Bury Tour – 19 September
  Guided architectural walk with Andy Marshall. Sessions at 10:30 am–12:30 pm & 1:30 pm–3:30 pm. Starts at Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre. Booking via Eventbrite.

• The Pattern of Streets – Ramsbottom Tour – 21 September
  One-mile architectural walk with Andy Marshall. Sessions at 10:30 am–12:30 pm & 1:30 pm–3:30 pm. Starts at Ramsbottom Railway Station. Booking required.
